A Boston bachelor party works best as a brewery afternoon in the Seaport or downtown, a game or a group activity, a steakhouse dinner in Back Bay and a late bar run downtown, where the latest bars close at 2 a.m. Book the group pieces ahead, because several Seaport game bars turn 21+ in the evening and Massachusetts law rules out open bars and drink specials, so plan your budget at regular bar prices.
Below are the places that take groups, what each one's booking rules are, and a one-day plan that strings them together.
What to know before you book
- No happy hours or open bars. State regulation 204 CMR 4.03 bars Massachusetts licensees from giving free drinks, serving one person more than two drinks at a time, discounting drinks below the price charged that week, or selling unlimited drinks for a fixed price, except at private functions. Drink packages therefore mean a private event.
- Last call comes before 2 a.m. Late bars such as The Wig Shop and Lucky's Lounge post closing times of 2 a.m.
- Bring a physical ID. Sam Adams Boston Taproom, for one, checks an unexpired photo ID or passport and does not accept digital copies.
- Big groups count as private events. The Wig Shop, for example, treats any party over six as a private event booked in advance.
Which Boston breweries work for a group?
Harpoon Brewery & Beer Hall, which received Massachusetts Brewing Permit #001 in 1986, pours in a working brewery at 306 Northern Avenue in the Seaport. Seating is first come, first served, but parties of 16 to 32 can request a two-hour multi-table event with a minimum spend of $50 a person. The beer hall closes for its Octoberfest, so check the site in early October.
Trillium Fort Point, a short walk away at 50 Thomson Place, takes online reservations for up to eight people, released 14 days ahead, and has a roof deck in warm weather. Downtown, Sam Adams Boston Taproom fills three floors and a rooftop deck at 60 State Street by Faneuil Hall; it does not take reservations but rents dedicated areas for larger groups. Democracy Brewing, a worker-owned brewery in Downtown Crossing, brews every beer it pours. A guided Boston brewery tour is also bookable on Viator.
If nobody wants to drive, City Brew Tours runs a guided 3.5-hour tour with transportation to three Boston-area breweries, cideries or distilleries and tastings of up to 12 drinks.
Games, darts and racing simulators
The Seaport has the city's cluster of game bars, and their age rules matter for a mixed group:
| Venue | What you do | Age rule |
|---|---|---|
| Flight Club, 60 Seaport Blvd. | Social darts with food and drinks; book online for 2 to 12 guests or 13 and up | 21+ after 6 p.m. Sunday to Friday, all day Saturday |
| Puttshack, 58 Pier 4 Blvd. | Tech-scored mini golf | 21+ after 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday |
| F1 Arcade, 87 Pier 4 Blvd. | Full-motion Formula 1 racing simulators | All ages; racers must be 7 or older |
For sports, Bruins and Celtics games fill the TD Garden calendar from fall to spring. Out of season, Fenway Park tours run every day of the year, and Bleacher Bar, the bar under the center-field bleachers, needs no game ticket and stays open to 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.
Can you charter a boat in Boston?
Yes, in season. The Liberty Fleet charters its two wooden schooners in Boston Harbor from May through October, with a minimum of 1.5 hours in the afternoon and two hours in the evening, and guests can help raise the sails. For something faster, the Codzilla speedboat leaves 1 Long Wharf; the operator warns it is a wet ride, and tickets start at $49.
Where to have the steak dinner
Back Bay has the steakhouses. Grill 23 & Bar on Berkeley Street has been independently owned since 1983, and its 2,600-plus wine list holds a Wine Spectator Grand Award. Abe & Louie's on Boylston Street serves prime aged steaks and recommends business casual dress. Davio's Northern Italian Steakhouse in Park Square opens for dinner at 3 p.m. and stays open until 11 p.m. Thursday to Saturday. All three book through OpenTable.
Late bars downtown
Temple Place in Downtown Crossing puts two late spots a few doors apart: The Wig Shop, a cocktail lounge open 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. daily, and jm Curley, whose late-night kitchen serves until 1:30 a.m. every night. In Fort Point, Lucky's Lounge sits underground behind red lights with no sign and keeps its kitchen open to 1:30 a.m. most nights. On Beacon Street, Carrie Nation Cocktail Club hides a speakeasy behind a red velvet curtain; it is first come, first served. Bell in Hand Tavern near Faneuil Hall dates its first pour to 1795 by its own account. For a view first, Rooftop at The Envoy in the Seaport takes reservations with a $25 booking fee and a minimum spend, with a two-hour limit per table.
A one-day Boston bachelor party plan
