The closest things to do near South Station are across Fort Point Channel: the Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum and the Boston Children's Museum are both on Congress Street, a flat walk over the bridge. With an hour or two you can also reach the New England Aquarium on foot (the aquarium puts it about 12 minutes from South Station), eat in Fort Point or the Leather District, or ride the Silver Line two stops to the Institute of Contemporary Art.
South Station is itself downtown, at 700 Atlantic Avenue on the edge of the Financial District, so most of central Boston is within walking distance or one T ride. This guide is organized by how much time you have, which is usually the real question when you are waiting for a train or a bus.

What runs from South Station?
South Station is Boston's main rail and bus hub. The MBTA lists the Red Line, the Silver Line (SL1, SL2 and SL3), eight Commuter Rail lines and the bus terminal there, and Amtrak runs the Acela, the Northeast Regional and the Lake Shore Limited from it. The SL1 runs to every Logan Airport terminal, and Massport notes that SL1 rides from the airport are free.
With an hour: Fort Point, across the channel
Walk east on Summer Street or Congress Street and you are over Fort Point Channel in a few minutes.
Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum
The museum sits on the Congress Street Bridge, in the same water where the tea went overboard on December 16, 1773. A visit is a one-hour guided tour with costumed interpreters, on timed tickets, and children get to throw tea over the side of a replica ship. Tours run daily from 10 a.m., with the last at 5 p.m., so an hour between trains is enough if you book a slot first.
Boston Children's Museum
At 308 Congress Street, the Children's Museum describes the walk from South Station as short and flat. It is open Wednesday to Monday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and closed Tuesdays. Admission is $24 for adults and for children aged 1 to 15. The exhibits are aimed at children from birth to about age 10 and include a house brought from Kyoto, Japan.
Fort Point for a drink or a meal
Fort Point's brick warehouses hold the closest good food to the station. Row 34 at 383 Congress Street is an oyster bar and seafood restaurant that opens at 11:30 a.m. daily. Trillium Fort Point at 50 Thomson Place pours its own beer with a full kitchen, a patio and a roof deck, and takes walk-ins. Lucky's Lounge, an underground bar at 355 Congress Street with no sign out front, puts South Station a 10-minute walk away and serves food late.
With an hour: the Greenway, the Leather District and Chinatown
Dewey Square, the plaza on the Rose Kennedy Greenway across Atlantic Avenue from the station, is one of the spots for the Greenway's food trucks in the warmer months, and the Greenway announced that Night Shift Brewing's beer garden would return there in May 2026. Check the Greenway's visit page for the day's schedule before counting on lunch there.
Behind the station, the Leather District is a few blocks of 19th-century warehouses. o ya at 9 East Street serves a prepaid chef's tasting menu, a planned splurge rather than a pre-train bite. A little further west, the Chinatown Gate stands at Beach Street and the Surface Road; our guide to things to do in Chinatown covers where to eat there.
With two to three hours: the waterfront and the Seaport
The New England Aquarium on Central Wharf is built around a four-story Giant Ocean Tank, and its harbor seal exhibit on the front plaza is free to watch. Entry is by timed ticket, so buy before you walk over. On the way you pass Rowes Wharf and the arch of the Boston Harbor Hotel.
For art, take the Silver Line Waterfront from South Station to Courthouse or World Trade Center for the Institute of Contemporary Art, whose galleries cantilever over the harbor. Admission is free for everyone 18 and under, and for all visitors on Thursdays from 5 to 9 p.m. More ideas are in our Seaport guide and our guide to things to do near the Tea Party museum.
With half a day: the Freedom Trail and Faneuil Hall
The Red Line runs two stops from South Station to Park Street, on Boston Common, where most people start the Freedom Trail. Following the red line is free. It leads past the Old State House to Faneuil Hall Marketplace, open Monday to Saturday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and from there the Paul Revere House in the North End is about ten minutes on foot. Our guide to things to do near Faneuil Hall picks up from there.
Where to stay near South Station
The Langham, Boston, at 250 Franklin Street in the former Federal Reserve Bank building, is in the Financial District between the station and Post Office Square. The Boston Harbor Hotel at Rowes Wharf is on the water, north of the station along Atlantic Avenue.
