Which airlines fly nonstop from Boston to Lisbon?
Massport, which runs Logan, lists two airlines on the nonstop Lisbon route: TAP Air Portugal, Portugal's national airline, and Delta. Delta describes its Boston-Lisbon flights as seasonal daily service, so outside that season TAP is the nonstop option. Every other itinerary connects, commonly through a European hub or another U.S. gateway, and adds anywhere from a couple of hours to an overnight layover. What time will you land in Lisbon?
Add the flight time and the time difference together: about 11 and a half hours on the clock. The nonstop flights are scheduled as overnight departures, so a flight leaving Boston around 6 p.m. reaches Lisbon before 6 a.m. local time. Plan for a full day on arrival rather than an evening; hotel check-in is usually hours away, so ask about luggage storage or book the night before your arrival.
The time difference is five hours for most of the year. Because the United States and the European Union change their clocks on different dates, it is four hours for about three weeks in March and for one week around the end of October.
Why is the flight home longer?
Transatlantic flights heading west fly into the jet stream and those heading east are pushed along by it, so Lisbon to Boston is typically an hour or more longer than the outbound leg. Actual times on any day depend on the winds, the routing and the aircraft, so treat the schedule as the guide rather than an average.
Getting to Logan Airport
Logan is in East Boston, unusually close to downtown. On the T, the Silver Line SL1 runs from South Station to the terminals, and the Blue Line stops at Airport station, where a shuttle bus goes to each terminal.
