The birthday freebies in Boston that reliably pay out are free food and drink treats from loyalty programs you join ahead of time: an ice cream reward at J.P. Licks, a scoop at Ben & Jerry's shops on Newbury Street and at Faneuil Hall, a dessert at Legal Sea Foods during your birthday month, a milkshake at Wahlburgers in Fenway, and a drink or food item from Starbucks. This page covers free food and drinks only, and almost none of these rewards work if you sign up on the day itself.

Ice cream: J.P. Licks and Ben & Jerry's
J.P. Licks is the local choice, with most of its shops inside the city. Its rewards scale with how often you visit: the entry tier gets a free small cup or cone, the middle tier a small sundae and the top tier a banana split. To qualify you need a registered Cow Card (or the app's virtual card), email opt-in and at least three uses of the card. The reward arrives on the first day of your birthday month and expires at the end of that month.
Ben & Jerry's renamed its old Chunk Spelunker club Flavor Fanatics. Sign up at least 24 hours before the first day of your birthday month, and an offer arrives by email around the 1st; redeem it at a participating shop any time that month by giving your phone number. Boston has scoop shops on Newbury Street and at Faneuil Hall Marketplace, so a Newbury Street walk can take in both brands.
A birthday dessert or shake: Legal Sea Foods and Wahlburgers
Legal Sea Foods, the Boston seafood chain, gives Legal Net Rewards members a free dessert during their birthday month, valid from the 1st, plus a free cup of clam chowder when you sign up. The most central dining rooms are at Copley Place in Back Bay, Long Wharf on the waterfront, Park Square and Downtown Crossing, with a Harborside location in the Seaport.
Wahlburgers sends WahlClub members an email on their birthday for a free non-alcoholic shake, usable for 14 days. The city location is on Brookline Avenue in Fenway, a useful stop before or after a Fenway Park tour; there are also branches in Logan Airport's Terminals C and E.
Coffee: Starbucks and Dunkin'
Starbucks Rewards members get one free handcrafted drink, food item or bottled drink. You must join at least seven days before your birthday, save your birthday in the account and make at least one Star-earning purchase before your birthday each year. Green-level members must redeem on the birthday itself; Gold members have seven days and Reserve members 30.
Dunkin' sends a birthday coupon to Dunkin' Rewards members who add their birthday to their profile. It expires at the end of the month after your birthday month, so there is no rush.
Offers that don't check out
Older Boston birthday lists repeat several offers we could not confirm. The New England Aquarium does not advertise birthday admission; its free-entry list covers children 2 and under, members, wheelchair users and visitors with visual impairments. Firehouse Subs runs a birthday sub reward, but its locator did not show a location in the city of Boston when we checked.
How to collect more than one
Sign up for everything at least a month before your birthday. That clears Ben & Jerry's deadline before the month starts, Starbucks' seven-day rule and purchase requirement, and J.P. Licks' three visits. Then plan a route: Newbury Street has both J.P. Licks and Ben & Jerry's, and Legal Sea Foods at Copley Place is also in Back Bay.
