The first things open in Boston are its parks: Boston Common and the Public Garden open at 6:30 a.m. (pedestrians can walk through at any hour), so a morning starts with a walk, then breakfast from 6:30 a.m. on weekdays at Contessa, and the first paid attractions at 9 a.m.: the New England Aquarium, the Museum of Science and, from April through October, tours of Fenway Park. Most Freedom Trail houses and churches open at 10 a.m.
That gives an early riser two to three hours with the city mostly to themselves. Use them outdoors and over breakfast, and save the ticketed sights for when the doors open. Here is what opens when, where to eat early, and a plan for the morning.

Where to walk before the city wakes up
The Common and the Public Garden. The two parks sit side by side between Park Street and Arlington stations, and an early lap takes in the Frog Pond, the lagoon footbridge and the Make Way for Ducklings statue at the corner of Beacon and Charles streets. The Swan Boats on the lagoon run from mid-April to early September, starting at 10 a.m., so an early walk sees them tied up at the dock.
The Harborwalk. Boston Harbor Now's path runs along 43 of the city's 47 miles of shoreline. The stretch past Long Wharf and Rowes Wharf toward the Fort Point Channel is the easiest from downtown, and it puts you at the aquarium for its 9 a.m. opening.
Castle Island. In South Boston, a free path loops around Fort Independence on Pleasure Bay and looks east across the outer harbor, so it faces the sunrise. Sullivan's, the snack stand by the fort, has served visitors since 1951 and keeps its own seasonal hours.
The Arnold Arboretum. The 281-acre arboretum in Jamaica Plain is free and open every day from sunrise to sunset, and the Orange Line ends at Forest Hills, next to its gate.

- Contessa, the rooftop restaurant of The Newbury Boston, serves breakfast from 6:30 a.m. on weekdays above the Public Garden.
- Aujourd'hui at Four Seasons Hotel Boston serves breakfast daily from 7 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., and LPM at Four Seasons One Dalton from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m.
- Artisan Bistro at the Ritz-Carlton opens at 7 a.m. daily.
- Parker's Restaurant at the Omni Parker House, on the Freedom Trail, serves breakfast daily in the dining room that created Boston cream pie.
- Boston Public Market, above Haymarket station, opens at 8 a.m. every day; vendors cook breakfast and George Howell Coffee pours coffee.
- Trident Booksellers & Cafe on Newbury Street opens at 8 a.m., so you can eat and browse in the same building.
- On weekends, The Black Rose near Faneuil Hall serves a full Irish breakfast from 10 a.m. to noon.
A Boston morning, hour by hour
- 7 a.m. Walk the Common and the Public Garden while the paths are empty.
- 8 a.m. Breakfast at Boston Public Market, beside Haymarket station.
- 9 a.m. Head into the New England Aquarium when it opens, or start the Freedom Trail on your own from the visitor center at 139 Tremont Street.
- 10 a.m. Join the Freedom Trail Foundation's first guided walk of the day, which leaves the visitor center at 10 a.m., or go straight to the Paul Revere House and Old North Church in the North End as they open.
In Back Bay instead, swap the aquarium for a 9 a.m. Fenway Park tour and finish at the Museum of Fine Arts at 10 a.m., except on Tuesdays, when it is closed.

Getting around early
Most T service starts around 5 a.m., so you can reach any of these places by subway before breakfast. The Massachusetts State House opens to visitors at 8:45 a.m. on weekdays but is closed on weekends, which makes a weekday the better morning for the start of the Freedom Trail.
