The Onyx Hotel in Boston is now the Pennyweight Hotel Boston, Curio Collection by Hilton: the same building at 155 Portland Street in the West End, next to TD Garden and North Station, renovated and reopened under the new name in October 2024. The old Ruby Room is gone; the hotel's one restaurant is now 155 on Portland, a cafe by day and a wine, beer and small-plates bar at night.
If you stayed at the Onyx before, or found it in an old guide, here is what changed, what stayed and what a stay costs in the extras that matter.
What changed when the Onyx became the Pennyweight?
| Onyx Hotel (before) | Pennyweight Hotel Boston (now) | |
|---|---|---|
| Name and brand | Onyx Hotel | Pennyweight Hotel Boston, Curio Collection by Hilton |
| Restaurant and bar | Ruby Room | 155 on Portland, with a summer patio |
| Address | 155 Portland Street | Unchanged |
| Rooms | Before the renovation | 112, renovated; Hilton Honors and Digital Key |
The owners, Boylston Properties and Copford Capital Management, renovated the hotel before the October 2024 reopening, according to Banker & Tradesman. The new name is a double reference: the street number, 155, and the pennyweight, an old unit of weight of about 1.55 grams.
Where is the Pennyweight Hotel?
At 155 Portland Street, Boston, MA 02114, in the West End. Hilton describes the hotel as steps from North Station, served by the Green and Orange Lines and Amtrak. TD Garden, home of the Celtics and Bruins, is 0.2 miles away, so on a game or concert night you can walk back to your room instead of queuing for the T.
Hilton's own distances from the hotel:
- TD Garden and the Big Night Live venue: 0.2 miles.
- Faneuil Hall Marketplace and Quincy Market: 0.5 miles.
- The North End, home of the Paul Revere House and the Old North Church: 0.6 miles.
- The Museum of Science: 0.6 miles.
- The New England Aquarium: 0.8 miles.
- Boston Logan International Airport: 3.5 miles.
Dining at 155 on Portland
155 on Portland replaced the Ruby Room as the hotel's restaurant and bar. By day it serves espresso drinks, breakfast and fresh pastries; in the evening it turns to wines, local craft beers, cocktails and shareable small plates, and in summer the patio outside is used for drinks and outdoor dining. Hilton lists it as open for breakfast and dinner, and lists breakfast as available for a fee rather than included.
Rooms, pets and parking
All 112 rooms are non-smoking. There is a fitness center, streaming TV in the rooms, cribs on request and Hilton's Digital Key. Pets are still welcome, with limits: dogs up to 75 pounds are allowed for a non-refundable fee, set out in the FAQ below. Parking is valet only, in a covered garage with in-and-out privileges; there is no self-parking, no EV charging and no airport shuttle, so the T or a taxi from Logan is the simpler arrival.
Who the Pennyweight suits
It works best for a Celtics, Bruins or concert night at TD Garden, for travelers arriving by train at North Station, and for a first visit that splits time between the North End, Faneuil Hall and the Freedom Trail. Travelers who want a pool, a spa or a full-service restaurant for lunch should look elsewhere.
