The most romantic things to do in Boston are watching the sun go down from View Boston, the open-air observation deck at the top of the Prudential Tower; walking the Public Garden and the Charles Street end of Beacon Hill at dusk; and booking dinner somewhere small and quiet, such as Mamma Maria on North Square. Finish with live jazz at Wally's Café Jazz Club in the South End and the whole evening works on foot and by T, with no car.

This guide is about the romantic side of Boston: skyline views, dinners for two, evenings out and hotels worth the splurge. For daytime activities and full day plans for couples, see our companion guide, things to do in Boston for couples.

Where can couples see the Boston skyline?

View Boston is the city's high-rise view now. It fills the top three floors of the Prudential Tower in Back Bay: a glassed-in panorama on the 52nd floor and, one floor down, the Cloud Terrace, an open-air roof deck that runs all the way around the building. Stratus, the bar on the terrace, pours cocktails from the afternoon into the evening, and a combined ticket includes one drink. View Boston itself recommends sunset for skyline views, and the deck is open until 10 p.m., so an early-evening ticket gives you both daylight and city lights. The Green Line E branch stops at Prudential, inside the same complex.

View Boston Observatory tickets

If an older guide sends you to Top of the Hub, the restaurant on the tower's 52nd floor, it closed in April 2020 after more than 54 years, when the building's owner declined to renew its lease. View Boston opened in its place in 2023.

For a view with a drink rather than an admission ticket, Rooftop at The Envoy in the Seaport looks over the harbor and the downtown skyline from the top of The Envoy Hotel. It is open all year, with fire pits in the colder months, and weekend tables are best reserved; it is 21+ from late afternoon.

The free option is the water itself. The Boston Harborwalk is a near-continuous public path along the shoreline, and the downtown stretch from Long Wharf to Rowes Wharf, where the archway of the Boston Harbor Hotel opens onto the harbor, is the easiest part to walk after dinner.

Romantic restaurants in Boston for a special dinner

A romantic dinner in Boston is less about a view than about the room: small, calm and willing to let you linger. These are open, bookable and suited to an anniversary or a proposal.

Two practical notes. Mamma Maria's private rooms can be reserved for a proposal or a small celebration, which is rare in the North End, where most dining rooms are one crowded space. And at o ya every seat is prepaid and sales are final, so book it only when the date is fixed. For a sushi tasting menu with more flexibility, Uni serves a daily tasting menu inside The Eliot Hotel on Commonwealth Avenue.

Romantic things to do in Boston at night

Live jazz a few feet from the band

Wally's Café has had live music every night since it opened on New Year's Day 1947, in a narrow room behind a red door on Massachusetts Avenue. It takes no reservations and has never had a dress code; the jam session runs early in the evening from Tuesday to Saturday and the night set runs to midnight. For dinner with the music, The Beehive on Tremont Street has a band every night of the week and no cover.

The Boston Symphony Orchestra at Symphony Hall

The Boston Symphony Orchestra is in its 2026–27 season at Symphony Hall, 301 Massachusetts Avenue. A concert here is the city's most classic dress-up evening, and Back Bay restaurants are a short ride or walk away.

Art after dark

The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum stays open until 9 p.m. on Thursdays, when entry is free from 5 p.m. with a timed ticket. The galleries, arranged by Isabella Stewart Gardner herself around a glass-roofed courtyard garden, are at their most intimate in the evening. Tickets for the free hours are released two days ahead.

A cocktail behind a curtain

At Carrie Nation Cocktail Club on Beacon Street, a corridor past the bar leads through a red velvet curtain to the Speakeasy, a windowless lounge with leather seating and billiards. The bar and the Speakeasy are first come, first served, so go early in the evening.

Where to propose or celebrate an anniversary

The Public Garden is the classic answer. It is free, open until 11 p.m. with pedestrian access around the clock, and the footbridge over the lagoon, dating from the 1860s, is the spot most couples choose. The Swan Boats that cross the lagoon are seasonal and are now closed until April 2027, so do not plan a proposal around one before then. For a private moment indoors, Mamma Maria can reserve one of its five rooms, and Contessa's Garden View Terrace looks over the same park from above.

If the celebration needs a small gift, Beacon Hill Chocolates on Charles Street makes decoupage keepsake boxes that can be personalized with names or a date.

Romantic hotels for a Boston weekend

  • Boston Harbor Hotel on Rowes Wharf sells every room category as either city view or harbor view, so the view is a choice you make when you book.
  • XV Beacon is a 61-room Beacon Hill hotel with fireplaces in the rooms, a block from Boston Common.
  • The Newbury Boston faces the Public Garden, and several room categories look over it; Fireplace Suites add a hearth for winter.
  • The Liberty, in the former Charles Street Jail, suits couples who want a lively evening without leaving the hotel, with the Charles River Esplanade within walking distance.

Romantic things to do in Boston by season

Boston's romantic calendar is seasonal. From mid-May to November, the New England Aquarium's whale watch leaves Central Wharf for Stellwagen Bank; our whale watching guide covers how to plan it. In winter, the Frog Pond on Boston Common becomes a skating rink run by The Skating Club of Boston. Spring brings the Swan Boats back and the Public Garden's flower beds into bloom, and fall is the best time for long walks.
