Whale watching from Boston means the New England Aquarium Whale Watch, run with Boston Harbor City Cruises: a three- to four-hour trip on a high-speed catamaran from the downtown waterfront next to the New England Aquarium out to Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, where humpback, fin and minke whales feed. It runs from mid-May through November, with several departures a day, and tickets start at $75. Meet Boston, the city's tourism bureau, says June through August gives the best odds of sightings.

When is whale watching season in Boston?
The 2026 season from Boston opened on May 18, and Aquarium naturalists sail on every trip from May through November. Boats sail daily in season, with multiple departures a day; check the cruise calendar for times. Across Massachusetts, NOAA's Stellwagen Bank sanctuary says most whale watch companies run from the beginning of May to the end of October, and some start earlier or finish later. Meet Boston notes that trips from Gloucester, on Cape Ann, start in mid-April, a month before Boston's.
What whales can you see from Boston?
Stellwagen Bank is a feeding ground for whales, dolphins and seabirds, which is why the boats go there. The species the Aquarium names are:
- Humpback whales, the main draw, because of what NOAA calls their reliable presence and dramatic behaviors; researchers tell individuals apart by their tail flukes.
- Fin whales (finbacks).
- Minke whales.
- North Atlantic right whales, which are critically endangered and seen far less often.
Dolphins and seabirds are common on the same trips. Sightings change from day to day; the naturalists' Naturalist Notes blog on the City Cruises site posts recent trip reports.

The trip is long because the whales are well offshore, and the ride out and back is part of it. The operator warns that sea conditions can change quickly and can make the ride rough, and it emails rough-seas warnings and cancellations, so watch your inbox on the morning of your trip.

Is there a whale sighting guarantee?
Meet Boston reports that the Boston cruise offers a sighting guarantee, with a free voucher for another trip if no whales are seen. City Cruises' own booking page does not spell out the terms, so ask when you book and keep your ticket.
What to wear and bring
- Layers. The operator recommends casual clothes, comfortable shoes and a warm sweatshirt or light jacket, because it is cool offshore even on a hot day.
- Motion sickness medication, taken before you board, if you are prone to seasickness; the operator recommends it.
- Sun protection and a camera for time on the outdoor viewing decks.
- A card or cash for the bar and snacks; both are accepted on board.
Responsible whale watching
Boston Harbor City Cruises is a member of Whale SENSE, a program started by NOAA Fisheries, Whale and Dolphin Conservation and the Stellwagen Bank sanctuary to recognize companies that follow responsible whale-watching practices. Whale watching on the East Coast itself began in Provincetown in the 1970s, on trips to what is now the sanctuary.
Make a day of the waterfront
The whale watch leaves from the same stretch of waterfront as the harbor cruises and the Aquarium. Combine it with the Aquarium's free outdoor harbor seal exhibit, a drink at the Dockside beer garden on Central Wharf, or a walk along the HarborWalk.
