The closest classic hibachi steakhouse to downtown Boston, where a chef cooks steak, shrimp and fried rice on a teppanyaki grill at your table, is Bisuteki Tokyo Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi Bar, just across the Charles River in Cambridge at the Courtyard by Marriott on Memorial Drive. Inside the City of Boston itself we could not find a table-side teppanyaki restaurant open in 2026. The nearest substitutes are FiRE+iCE in Back Bay, where cooks stir-fry the ingredients you choose on a big round grill, Gyu-Kaku in Dorchester, where you grill at the table yourself, and the hibachi station at Flaming Grill & Buffet in Hyde Park.
That is a less tidy answer than most lists give, and it matters if you are planning a birthday dinner around the knife-flipping show. Earlier versions of this page named three Boston hibachi restaurants; one of them, Osaka, was in Brookline and has since closed, and we could not find the other two operating at all. Everything below was checked against the restaurant's own website or its hotel's, plus its current Google business listing, on October 1, 2026.
Is there a hibachi restaurant in Boston?
Not in the traditional sense. Boston's Japanese dining leans toward sushi bars, izakayas and omakase counters, and the teppanyaki steakhouses that serve the suburbs (Saugus, Needham, Peabody, Foxborough) never had a foothold downtown. Search results for hibachi in Boston mostly surface at-home hibachi caterers and suburban steakhouses for that reason. If you want the full show without leaving the urban core, Cambridge is the answer; if you want the grill-at-the-table fun inside Boston, pick one of the three alternatives below.
Bisuteki Tokyo, Cambridge: the closest teppanyaki show
Bisuteki Tokyo Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi Bar is one of two restaurants inside the Courtyard by Marriott Boston Cambridge at 777 Memorial Drive, and the hotel describes it as an authentic teppanyaki-style experience with a full-service cocktail lounge alongside. It sits on the Cambridge bank of the Charles River in Cambridgeport, so it is across the river from Boston rather than in it. The hotel takes table bookings for Bisuteki by phone at 617-497-8888; call ahead for a birthday or a group, since seating is at shared grill tables. Bisuteki's own old website now points to a parked domain, so use the Marriott page and the phone number rather than an online search result.
FiRE+iCE, Back Bay: an interactive grill inside Boston
FiRE+iCE at 205 Berkeley Street is the closest thing to hibachi energy in central Boston, though it works differently. The restaurant calls itself an all-you-can-eat interactive grill similar to Mongolian barbecue: you fill a bowl with proteins, vegetables, noodles and sauces, then hand it to the cooks at a large round grill, who cook it in front of you. It suits families, picky eaters and groups, because everyone builds their own plate, and vegetarian and gluten-free guests can do the same. Dinner is a fixed per-person price with a two-hour limit, lunch runs Wednesday to Friday and brunch on weekends. It is in the heart of Back Bay, a short walk from Copley Square and Newbury Street, and the restaurant recommends reserving at peak times.
Gyu-Kaku South Bay, Dorchester: grill it yourself
At Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ at 23 District Avenue in Dorchester's South Bay development, there is no chef at your table: each table has its own grill and you cook thin cuts of meat and vegetables yourself, Japanese yakiniku style. For many families that is the better show, since the kids get to do the cooking. It is inside the City of Boston, books through OpenTable, takes walk-ins and runs a weekday happy hour. Note that it does not accept mobile pay. Gyu-Kaku's other nearby branches are in Brookline and in Harvard Square, Cambridge, not Boston.
Flaming Grill & Buffet: a hibachi station on a budget
Flaming Grill & Buffet at 950 American Legion Highway, in the Stop & Shop plaza it calls its Roslindale location, is a family-run all-you-can-eat buffet with Chinese, Japanese and American food, a sushi bar and a hibachi grill where cooks stir-fry what you pick. It is the cheapest way to get hibachi-grilled food in Boston, it runs an all-day buffet on Sundays and it has a party room for birthdays. It is a drive from downtown rather than a T trip for most visitors.
Hibachi near Boston, and hibachi at home
If you have a car and want a traditional hibachi steakhouse, Fuji Steak House at 1430 Highland Avenue in Needham advertises chefs cooking hibachi steak and chicken on the teppanyaki grill, with a hibachi lunch as well as dinner. For a party, private hibachi chefs who bring a grill to your rental or backyard now dominate Boston search results; the operators we checked quote roughly $55 to $65 per adult with a minimum of around $550 to $600 per booking, so compare the minimum, travel fees and what happens in rain before you book.
Hibachi or teppanyaki: what you are actually ordering
In the United States the two words are used for the same thing: a chef cooking on a large flat iron griddle in front of diners. Strictly, teppanyaki means grilling on an iron plate, while a hibachi is a small charcoal brazier. When a Boston-area restaurant says hibachi, expect the griddle show: fried rice, vegetables, a choice of steak, chicken, shrimp or scallops, and a chef who performs while cooking.
Japanese food in Boston if the show is not the point
Boston's best-known Japanese restaurants are about the fish rather than the flames. o ya in the Leather District serves a nightly chef's-choice tasting menu, and Uni, inside The Eliot Hotel in Back Bay, pairs sushi and sashimi with hot plates. Hojoko, the rock-and-roll Japanese tavern at The Verb Hotel near Fenway Park, is the casual, loud option.
